Past LM/Harriton games

Speaking of the LM-Harriton rivalry, here is a recollection from LM soccer alum Ward Rusling (class of '62), 50 years later, on the magnitude of this annual contest.

1961: LM needed a win to stay in second place in the league, even a tie would have dropped us to third. That would have been the first time since LM started playing soccer in 1926 that LM finished lower than second, and that would have been a horrible blow to our pride. We had four guys who were first team All-Suburban, and yet we did not win the league.

On your goal, Jim Caplan, I remember it as a thing of beauty. Detlev Tauber and I fought for the ball about ten yards from you and we both tried to kick it at the same time, but I got a bigger piece of it than he did and it rolled to you. One waste high push with the bottom of your cleats and boom, just like it should be done, it floated past Mike Kirschner, the Harriton goalie, and into the net for a one nothing win for Lower Merion.

It is interesting that Mike Kirschner turned out to be your roommate at Penn State, where you both played on a remarkable freshman team, with players from Ecuador, Iran, Iraq, and the boondocks of Pennsylvania!

If any of you LM soccer alums are reading this, and have a story about the LM/Harriton game in your senior year, email me at bubdavidson@comcast.net and tell me about it.
